Keen to explore a career in aid? Want to better prepare yourself for an overseas role?

Aid workers can make a world of difference. Partnering with agencies and local communities around the world, aid workers provide vital healthcare, water, shelter, protection, psychosocial care and other assistance to those affected by conflict and disasters. Local people and their communities are supported to develop resources like access to safe water and improved sanitation. The Australian Red Cross International Humanitarian Action Training (IHAT) is an inspiring, practical and informative three-day course, that will help you understand what it takes to be an effective aid worker.

Who is this course for?

IHAT is ideal for anyone keen to start a career in aid or who is looking to prepare for a paid or volunteer overseas role. Our participants come from a wide range of professional and working backgrounds.

What will you learn?

Experienced aid workers, from both Red Cross and other humanitarian organisations, will build your understanding of:

  • what is needed to work effectively in humanitarian assistance
  • the key pillars of humanitarian action - 'assistance and protection'
  • how to stay safe and maintain your health and wellbeing in challenging field environments
  • what are the variety of aid roles and pathways for careers in humanitarian assistance

Course locations

IHAT is offered several times a year, in capital cities around Australia. Each course runs three full days and is non-residential.

Participants make their own accommodation and transport arrangements. All course rates include training materials, lunch and morning and afternoon tea.
